Introductory Motorcycle Experience (IME)

NEVER DRIVEN A CLUTCH VEHICLE BEFORE? WANT TO SEE WHAT IT'S LIKE TO RIDE A MOTORCYCLE?

Everything you need to know about the IME we offer is on this page if you take the time to read it thoroughly. If you have trouble reading English, highlight the words on this page and use Google Translate to translate them into your native language or have someone translate it to you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's (MSF) Introductory Motorcycle Experience (IME) is an introduction to motorcycling designed for those who;

1) Are not sure if motorcycling is for them and want to try it out and see if they want to learn how to ride a motorcycle.

2) Want some practice getting used to using a clutch before taking the Basic RiderCourse (BRC1).

This 1 to 1 1/2 -hour session will familiarize you with all the motorcycle controls and give you some time to practice using the clutch and throttle. You will also learn and practice the process for shifting. Using the clutch & throttle and shifting on a motorcycle require coordination.

This is a great way to see if riding a motorcycle is for you and to get some practice using the clutch and throttle before attending the BRC1 with other students who may already have experience using a clutch vehicle. Taking an IME increases your chances of successfully completing the BRC1.

The session is conducted as a private one-on-one lesson on weekends at MSU or during the week when MSU doesn't have classes scheduled. The IME is conducted on one of our training motorcycles.

You must be at least age 17 to take an IME.

THE IME IS NOT A LEARN TO RIDE COURSE. THE BRC1 IS A LEARN TO RIDE COURSE.

What Do I Need To Bring and Wear for the IME?

 You will need the following;

  1. Possess the ability to balance and ride a bicycle.
  2. Shoes - you must wear sturdy over-the-ankle shoes (leather preferred) to protect your ankles from injury. (Your ankle bone must be covered).
  3. Pants - you must wear jeans or pants made with equivalent or sturdier material than jeans to protect your legs from injury. (No light material pants, leggings, sweatpants or holes in the pants).
  4. Shirt/Jacket - you must wear a long sleeve garment (shirt, sweat shirt, jacket) to protect your torso and arms from injury. The more durable the material, the better the protection.
  5. Gloves - you must wear full-fingered gloves (leather preferred) to protect your hands and fingers from injury.
  6. Eye-protection - you must wear glasses, sunglasses, goggles, or a face-shield on your helmet to prevent something from getting in your eyes while riding the motorcycle.
  7. Helmet - you must wear a DOT (Department of Transportation), Snell or ECE certified motorcycle helmet to protect your head from injury. (We have a supply of full-face DOT helmets if you do not have a helmet).

We are not allowed to conduct the IME unless you have all of the last six items listed above.

HEIGHT REQUIREMENT

You must be able to place both of your feet on the ground when sitting on our training motorcycles. You should be at least 5 feet tall or have a 28 inch inseam. If you cannot place both of your feet on the ground, you will not be allowed to take the IME for safety reasons.

Practice Riding Location

The IME is held at our training location at Montclair State University which is in parking Lot 60 located at 35 Clove Rd in Little Falls behind the student bus platform and the bus garage. (From Rt. 46 East, make a right onto Clove Rd, which is just before McDonalds. Bear right at the traffic circle, make a right after going under the train trestle and go to the end of the lot by our storage container). We have the location pinned on Google Maps - The Riding Academy of NJ.

Course Price

The price for the IME is only $99. (There is a $20 discount if you have already registered for a BRC1 course with The Riding Academy of NJ. Show your IME instructor your BRC1 confirmation email/tickets). If you cancel your appointment less than one hour before the scheduled session or do not show for the session, for whatever reason, we reserve the right to add a $20 cancelation fee to the rescheduled session.

How Do I Sign-up for the IME?

Testimonials

"I took the IME before taking the BRC1. So glad I did! I have never driven a car with a clutch. Joann worked with me for awhile until I got the hang of using the clutch and throttle. She was awesome. And what a difference. I was able to keep up with the others in the BRC1. In fact, some of the others in the class were struggling and stalling. I never stalled once. The IME is well worth the time and money"............Maria Cantarios

"My boyfriend tried to teach me how to drive his clutch car a few years ago. Bad, bad experience. I always wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle but using the clutch worried me. I decided to try the IME. Super Dave was very patient with me and helped me get it. I only stalled the motorcycle once when I took the BRC1. I never stalled after that. Thank you guys. You are really the best" ........ Gloria Reyes

"I wanted to see if motorcycling was for me or not. I took the IME to see what it was like. Loved the feeling. I'm hooked. Took the BRC1 two weeks later".........Bill Sarkowski
