The Additional Practice RiderCourse (APRC)

Everything you need to know about the APRC offered by The Riding Academy of NJ is on this page if you take the time to read it thoroughly. If you have trouble reading English, highlight the words on this page and use Google Translate to translate them into your native languageor have someone translate it to you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's (MSF) Additional Practice RiderCourse (APRC), formerly the APBRC, which is approved and sponsored by the NJ MVC, is offered periodically as a group session or as a private session when MSU classes are not in session. It is designed for those who;

  • Already have their motorcycle license/endorsement and want some additional practice before riding on the street. You may want additional practice after recently completing the BRC1 or maybe you haven't ridden for awhile and want a refresher. You can use one of our training motorcycles or your own 2-wheel motorcycle for this course. If you use your own 2-wheel motorcycle, it must be registered and insured.

  • Took the BRC1 (or the BRC2 LW) safety course with a NJ MVC-approved motorcycle school within the last 180 days and didn't pass the MSF Skill Test, and want a few more hours of additional riding practice before re-taking the MSF Skill Test. You can use one of our training motorcycles or your own 2-wheel motorcycle for the retest. (If you use your own 2-wheel motorcycle, it must be registered and insured. If you ride your motorcycle to MSU, you must have a current and valid NJ motorcycle permit. Otherwise, you can trailer the motorcycle to MSU or someone with a NJ motorcycle permit or a motorcycle license/endorsement can ride it to MSU. If you use your own motorcycle that is under 232cc or your own 2-wheel electric motorcycle for the course and Skill Test, your motorcycle endorsement from the NJ MVC will include a restriction 5, which means you will not be able to ride a motorcycle that is larger than 500cc on public roads).

HOW LONG IS THE APRC AND WHAT DOES IT CONSIST OF?

The APRC we offer is a 10-hour course that contains 2 modules or parts.

MODULE 1 -  You begin by first taking a 5-hour (average time) Pre-Course Assignment which is a self-paced interactive asynchronous module (the MSF eP1x11 eCourse) that familiarizes you with some of the physical and non-physical skills needed to ride a motorcycle safely, which you do on your own, at your own pace. (This is the same MSF eP1x11 eCourse for the BRC1). The MSF eP1x11 eCourse must be completed before Module 2 - the riding session. We suggest spending an hour a day on the MSF eP1x11 eCourse until it is completed. If you already took the MSF eP1x11 eCourse, you do not need to take it again unless you want a refresher. Just re-print the Completion Certificate. You can access your MSF eP1x11 eCourse Completion Certificate with this link. Click "Returning Student".

If you haven't taken the MSF eP1x11 eCourse, the link for the MSF eP1x11 eCourse, which allows you to take the MSF eP1x11 eCourse for free, is included in the Confirmation email/tickets you will receive from Eventbrite (our registration platform) after registering for the course, and it will also be in the reminder email you will receive from The Riding Academy of NJ a few days after you register for the course. (You'll find the link under "Additional Information", item #3 in the Confirmation email/tickets). You can also click MSF eCourse to access the link.

If you register additional people for a class, you will have to forward the confirmation email to them.

MODULE 2 - The practice riding session is approximately 3-5 hours (depending on the class size). It consists of some of the practice riding exercises from the BRC1. If you are taking the APRC to retake the MSF Skill Test, the MSF Skill Test will be administered after the last practice riding exercise.

ORIENTATION SESSION - If you are taking the group session APRC, there will be a 1 1/2 hour remote/virtual/online Orientation Session at 6:00 PM on the Tuesday night before the date scheduled for Module 2. This session will properly prepare you for the riding session. It will cover the riding gear required for the riding exercises, questions about the MSF eP1x11 eCourse, the Liability Waivers that need to be signed before the first riding session, the riding exercises, the Skill Test if you are taking the course for the License Waiver, making an appointment with the NJ MVC to get your motorcycle endorsement, and answer any questions you may have. The link to the Orientation Session will be sent in an email three days before the scheduled date of the Orientation Session. A reminder email will be sent one day before the scheduled date of the Orientation Session. THE ORIENTATION SESSION IS ONLINE DONE AT YOUR LOCATION (YOUR HOME, YOUR OFFICE, ETC.). This email and additional informative emails are sent as automated group emails by Eventbrite, our registration platform. This session is optional if you took the BRC1, the BRC2 LW or the APRC with The Riding Academy of NJ and already attended it.

If you are not getting the automated group emails, it could be for the following reasons;

a) One of your email addresses was incorrect on the Registration Order Form

b) Your Spam or Security settings are either sending the group automated emails to your Spam or Junk folder or deleting them.

c) You may have unsubscribed from a marketing email from Eventbrite.

Here are a few suggestions since we can't forward the automated group emails;

1) Add noreply@event.eventbrite.com to your email Contacts list.

2) Check your "Filters and Blocked Addresses" email settings.

3) Send us a different email address and we will add it to the Eventbrite system so you receive the remaining automated group emails.

THE RIDING SESSION (Module 2)

The group practice riding session is held on either a Saturday or Sunday afternoon from 1:00 PM to approximately 6:00 PM at our training location at Montclair State University in parking Lot 60 located at 35 Clove Rd in Little Falls (off Rt. 46 East) behind the student bus platform and the bus garage. (From Rt. 46 East, make a right onto Clove Rd, which is just before McDonalds. Bear right at the traffic circle and make a right after going under the train trestle, and go to the end of the lot by our storage container). We have the location pinned in Google Maps - The Riding Academy of NJ.

The maximum number of students permitted in each class by State and MSF regulations is 12.

Private practice riding sessions are offered during the week when MSU has no classes scheduled. Send us an email if you would like to schedule a private APRC session.

Classes are held rain or shine. If rain is in the forecast, bring rain gear (rain jacket, rain pants, waterproof shoes, waterproof gloves or latex gloves under your gloves) to keep you dry and prevent hypothermia on cold rainy days.
